Captivated by Boro
We all have stories about the time we spent sheltered-in-place. During that time, I began reading about Boro, both the aesthetic of it and the people, mostly women who so quietly and unnamed created with limited resources. I love Japanese fabrics and their hand crafted arts. After learning more and more about the history and philosophy of Boro I began saving every, tiny little scrap to use in my work…sometimes even the selvedges take on meaning and beauty. I’m happy to be sharing my love of Boro and Sashiko now by teaching a Boro and Sashiko inspired stitching class and speaking about their legacy that’s finding new life with fiber artists and stitchers today. There’s a wonder calm that’s found in the many stitches of a piece and the satisfaction of giving new life to cloth that might other wise be discarded.
In addition to talking about the origins and necessity of Boro I cover Indigo dying, where fabric specifically cotton came from and who had access to it, Wabi Sabi: the beauty of transience and imperfection and the impact of Sashiko stitching and Boro on artists and fashion today.
